Convert to solid state ignition and coils? was created by roysclockgun
Dear Sirs, I am in the process of restoring my '82 KZ750E. The bike ran well two years ago, but has been in storage. I have the bike running, after replacing: plugs, spark lead wires and having the carbs rebuilt. I replaced the tank and know that the inside is not rusty. My problem now is due to the spark breaking down, at highway speeds, my mechanic believes that I need new coils. I am considering using the Dyna DC1-1 Ignition Coil Set, offered by "Old Bike Barn". Is this a good choice? Should I also go with their solid state ignition to replace the points?
Describing the problem: Engine starts and runs well at idle. A "feeling" of lack of power is felt at city running speeds, but it is on the highway, that the problem is really shown. I can feel momentary surges in power, but mostly with the throttle wide open, I am only attaining 70mph, sometimes dropping to 60mph, or less. Once, the engine stopped altogether from highway speed. sashe@cfl.rr.com or phone 386-747-4515
Any help/suggestions, will be appreciated,

Brand new Dyna coil and ignition runs ~ $250 for both. Unless he's giving you a smoking deal, go new versus used if you have the funds $$$... Either way, hell of a lot better then 30 year old components...

Also, don't forget to replace plug wires and caps as well...;)

Same time, in your service manual you'll find a fairly defined method of trouble shooting the coils & electronics using a DVM... Would provide you some further insight to what's occurring at higher rpm's...

Your bike already has IC ignition. The Kawasaki ignition is a very good system. It is a possibility that you have bad coils but I don't think so. Especially if you get power at wide open. Coils will be progressively worse as RPM gos up. However going to a better Dyna coil will increase performance in the long run, your problem is carburetion adjustment. You have improper mid range adjustment. Either your needles are not properly adjusted or your slides are not operating the way they should. You should take the carburetors apart and make sure they are cleaned properly. It sounds like something is clogged or gummed up. If you want to change the coils, you will require the Dyna "Gray" coils 2.2 Ohm, plus wires. The coils do not come with them. These coils are available from Z1E at the following link.
www.z1enterprises.com/detail.aspx?ID=1306 The coils you require are the DC4-1 coils for your ignition and they are the Cheapest at Z1E.

Hey Otakar,
Have you actually measured the Dyna 2.2 ohm coils? Just curious to the actual measured resistance.

The Kawasaki factory manuals I've seen show a range of 1.8 to 2.8, which would imply the target is 2.3 ohm, but all of the coils I've measured were more like 2.4 to 2.7 ohm. Some were even relatively new coils, so I don't know if age is the only factor.

The reason I ask is because the actual value matters for when an HEI module's current limiter kick in. If the coil resistance is too low, the module will have to dissipate a large surge of heat.
