Replacement switches for controls? was created by switch
My 81 1000 CSR horn button has Erectile Dysfunction! It can't get up!
My horn button was flaccid. No room for button to travel to make contact.

I have disassembled the control housing, and I have no idea how to assess the condition of the switch. I would expect to find a broken spring, perhaps, but that doesn't seem to be the case. There is a spring action in both directions that this switch will toggle.

I will post a pic tommorrow. I have looked on Kawi's parts diagrams and there is no breakdown of the various switches.

Does anyone know where I might find a replacement switch?

In the past I have taken the control apart, cleaned it up and stretched the spring to get extended life out of it, worked for starter button too. Small parts make it a bit of a challenge sometimes tho and make sure all the wire goes just like it was from factory or pinching resulting in shorts can happen.

If the spring is worn out/overstretched, Iv'e found that sometimes the springs from ball point pens or other writng instruments will work. They might need cutting to shorten them.

I will be replacing my left HB control with an aftermarket KG unit in the very near future. You are welcome to the entire unit when I do so. It is a 1981 KZ1000M1 (CSR) unit. If you can wait for a week or two. I may need to keep the harness plug from it. If I do than I will just cut it off about 6" inches from the plug end side unless you just want to trade so I can have your plug. My control is in perfect working order but is sun faded.

Otakar,
Mine is also VERY sun-faded on the top and some on the bottom. But while I had the unit disassembled I tried using Armorall protectant on it, and SHAZZAM! the color came right back up. It worked on the switches themselves, too. (that is the plastic parts of the switches)
If you haven't tried this it is worth it. I am not sure how long the effect will last.
I thank you for your offer, but you may not want to get rid of this unit if it will respond to the treatment.

Anyway, The end of my story is here: I took the switch apart after unsoldering the wires, and it was clogged with old dielectric grease, everything was corroded and crappy. However, everything cleaned up well and quickly, and the switch seemed to have some more "stand up and be ready".

After full reassembly, and replacing the old horn, I now have a perfectly functioning horn. And, (are you ready for it?) I can now toot my own horn.

Thanks guys.

I use a very good brand of electrical contact cleaner called "De-oxit" available at Radio Shack stores in the U.S. or any good electronic supply place.

www.deoxit.com is the website. I use it on my bike's many and various electrical connectors and switches along with charging stations for our cordless phone, and the entertainment center patch cords.

There are quite a few different tricks to get rid of the faded plastic. that never bothered me. I am replacing the unit with a better one. I bought one that has more features incorporated in it. One feature being a headlight on/off switch. :S

Care to share the link? I am also looking to make styling changes in the next two years, but first wanted to get the stock bike complete. I am interested in all control/speedo type alternatives.
