The battery acts like a surge tank, that is it absorbs voltage surges and stabilizes the output of the regulator/rectifier after receiving the alternators A.C. output.
Some riders have replaced the battery with a large capacitor(I'm not sure what voltage of MFD they used).(MFD = Microfarads, how electrical capacitors are rated). In Canada/England, maybe Europe they call them condensors.

Another thought: with the battery out of the circuit, any quick run through the gears will quickly burn out any lights(headlight, tailight, turn signals, and instrument lights) due to uncontrolled voltage surges and possibly damage the ignition system too.

The capacitor acts like the battery, but is much smaller and much lighter. Only bikes with permanent magnet alternators can do this mod. The capacitor is needed to make the regulator able to regulate properly, and store a bit of energy for when it is needed in pulses for the ignition.
6000 microfarad (usually written as MFD or uF) to 12000 microfarad, 50 volt, electrolytic capacitor should work.
The regulator is still in the circuit so it should not go over about 14.5 volt same as stock.
If the reg/rec on the bike has a brown sense wire, that sense wire should be tied permanently to the positive side of the cap. That's really the only change needed to replace a battery with a capacitor. Your bike, I think, has a 4-wire reg/rec (Red, black, 2 yellow) so this won't be an issue for you.
I've been running one for about 2 years, with no real problems, but before doing this mod, make sure the bike is tuned well enough to reliably start in one kick or so.

The capacitor has a positive and negative terminal just like a battery. You just hook up the cap in place of the battery. Obviously the cables for the battery will be too big and heavy for the cap, so you will probably have to replace the cables with smaller wires etc. But you may want to do that anyway for cosmetic reasons. Also if it proves reliable, you may eventually want to rewire the bike to have the bare minimum wires.
You want to make sure the cap is mounted firmly and protected from water and heat. But make sure you don't crush it. The clamp you use should have some rubber in it to hold without a lot of pressure. The caps are easy to crush.

Is your starter button part of your throttle? Cause on my '78 kz650 it is. would you replace the throttle or just keep it?
