i have had this bike only a short bit, yet have had to hook the battery up to a charger several times... some days i take it out, and it randomly kills, and wont start again... the battery is new. it takes a few good days between charge. i have no idea if its my start button, a wire, or the charging system. help?

Welcome.
Are the fluid levels up to the upper line on the sdie of the battery?
If so, then some tests of the charging system are in order.
Here are some posts that may have your answer:
forums.kz650.info/index.php?action=search2
That link just takes you to a search box.
Type in stator testing for some similar problems.

Howdy. Get a manual for your bike. A factory manual for an 83 Kz650 might be kinda rare. An 81-82 650 manual may be fine.
What type of charger did you use?
And was the battery properly charged etc before putting it into service?

The website
www.electrosport.com
has a troubleshhoting page to help diagnose charging problems.Sounds to me either your alternators stator(the wire windings) are damaged or the regulator/rectifier is not working properly.
If after troubleshooting that the regulator/rectifier is determined to be bad, try this website for replacement:
www.oregonmotorcycleparts.com/Products.html
A list of rebuilders/new manufacturers of stators/regulators:
www.rmstator.com
www.customrewind.com
www.regulatorrectifier.com
www.ricksmotorsportselectrics.com

well, the battery is fine. ive been lookin for a manual. found a few, but got to order it. so was just curious for some ideas. and the charging system seems to be the most likely, because unless its hardly turning over(low batt) i usually can start it no problem. but sometimes, if i leave it alone then go back to it a bit later i can get it to turn over more than once or twice like when the battery is drained.
