kz650, cant get stator!?
21 Mar 2010 17:38
my electrical system isnt charging, ive narrowed it down to a bad stator, im 99% sure, everything else is in order, nothing appears to be unhooked, all the wiring has just been teemed over with a fine tooth comb, far as i can tell my stator is shot. only problem is, i cant find an aftermarket one, and the dealership gives me this "they made bikes back then?" look when i ask about parts for a 78 kz. dennis kirk doesnt carry one, neither do any brands they carry. im at a loss, is this bike basically toast then? is a stator from a wrecker a bad idea, or is that basically my only hope? any ideas or help is appreciated, as this is my only bike and i just finished a full frame up rebuild on the old girl, i dont wanna put her away with the season not even really under way yet.

ebay can be a source. Sometimes a crap shoot though.
Have you tested it as per manual instructions?
I know there's aftermarket ones available too, new.
I'll try to find the post with the suppliers name.
Electrosport I believe.

New stators are available via ebbaayy, but I don't know if they have them for your model. Search for New Stator KZ650CSR. The CSR has electronic ignition; you could make the conversion from points ignition.

Re: kz650, cant get stator!?

thanks guys. the unfortunate thing about this bike is that it doesnt conform to any wiring diagram ive ever found for kz650s. the wiring harness has never been changed from factory, and yet its completely different from every published schematic, and not just a little different, like one or two wires in common and thats it. which unfortunately means that anything to do with the electrical system in service manuals does not apply to this bike. newer kz's dont match up, older kz's dont match up, its ridiculous. im starting to think this could have been some weird rare custom factory kz, or some kind of limited edition or prototype for the 78 model year, maybe actually made in 75 or 76. because honestly, ive looked at piles of wiring diagrams, and even rummaged through wrecked kz's at the wrecker, and for all intensive purposes, this bike never existed... could it be possible to have some weird rare kz that was never put into production? either way, due to this odd situation, im taking to some guys who have been troubleshooting and working on old jap bikes forever, just so i dont screw it up anymore than i probably already have.

What specific model do you have? - e.g., 1980 KZ650-F1
Do you have the factory manual for the bike? - it should have a wiring diagram.
Does the bike have points ignition or electronic ignition?

Go to these two websites and ask about your unusual situation:
1. www.wgcarbs.com (he's pretty knowledgeable about older bikes).

Or better yet, what excactly is your engine serial number? Knowing the number would help a lot in determining what you actually have.
A quick question: looking at your stator cover, does it have 3 bolts in the center like the cover in the pic below?
If it does, your engine is from a 77 B1 or C1 - these two models use an alternator that was only used that year. They also use a separate voltage regulator and rectifier and the alternator/reg/rec is wired very differently from the rest of the 650s.

KZ650BE is the beginning of a 650 engine number, is it possible that your bike is registered under the engine number since you have a custom frame? (Assuming it's your bike in your avatar).
Like already said, your engine serial number would be a big help - it is stamped on top right side of the cases, right next to the oil filler cap.
Some good pics of the engine and possibly the innards would help too.
