Condensers ???
29 Mar 2006 15:04
Hi Guys,
I was doing a tune-up on my 78' KZ650 SR this afternoon and I kinda hit a snag. I was planning on changing the points and condensers and my manual shows the condensers being mounted on the same plate as the points....
But I don't see them
, I have a green wire running to one set and a black going to the other set, and a red and blue wire.
Am I looking in the wrong place ?
Thanks-Brian

According to my service manual, the standard place for the capacitors is next to each other at the six O'clock position of the timing plate. The blue rectangular items aren't shown in the manual. Per the manual, only the green and black wires are shown going from the breaker points to either coil. The red/blue wire isn't shown. Where does it go to in the breaker assembly and what does the other end connect to?
Could this be some quasi electronic ignition upgrade?

A transistorized booster would most likely eleiminate the condensers.
Also, in the case of standard points, the condensers can really be mounted anywhere as long as their bodies are connected to ground and their wires go to the negative sides of the coils.

I'm not too hip on the 650's but that whole set-up doesn't look stock...the backing plate screws should be phillips heads, and the plate itself should be more of a bronze colour??
Ya...I'd guess that, that IS an aftermarket ignition assembly...of some sort...

Any idea what that is ? The blue and red wire runs out of the same harness as the green and black wires.
Thanks,

Have you looked around your coils for the condensers?

I just checked them, and I don't see any condensors. In the morning I'll try and trace the wires from the points...

that is not a stock plate, I am not sure what that is off of, the oil sender seems way tight to the plate also
