You guys helped me out with a lot of questions and I'm still having problems this spring with the bike running rough at times. But only when I run at constant speed (3-4K)through a village or lower speed limit in a higher gear. If I accelerate it runs great, scary fast and it idles right down nice to about 1,000 smooth and even. I did change the plugs and #3 was fouled. Maybe that carb float is stuck. I did try pulling the choke out a little while going through town and it seems to even it out. I also ran some Gumout fuel system cleaner through it and it seemed to fix it for a while.
I guess I have to do a major tear down and inspection and cleaning. I think first I will check compression to see if there's anything bad going on that would be indicated by that test. Next is the valve adjustment. Are they adjustable in an 82 KZ1000-M2?
I'm just anxious to ride, I don't want to spend the many hours to fix it, just lazy I guess!
Thanks in advance for any comments.
Ride safe!

I almost guarantee that you have carburetor problem. With the symptoms you have explained and the diagnostics you have done I am 99.5% sure. Did you do any mods like remove the airbox and install pod filters? Or is it still stock?

Valves are adjusted via shims. Not a big deal, done in an afternoon with time to spare trying out the new setting.
If one plug is oily, this could indicate to a bad stem seal or guide and that means a bit bigger job. I think I would clean the carburettor first before I do anything else.

My 82 CSR runs smooth and I have #3 and #4 on the oily side. I use a lot of oil, but the exhaust is pretty clean, which almost indicates that the engine loves the oil.

Just an update,
I put in new kits and cleaned the carbs, yeah what a mess, the bowls were fill of brownish greasy gunk probably blocking flow to the main jet (in the bottom of the recess in the bowl. She runs like new again!

I got them from this Ebay store, $66 for all four kits!
