One side hot, the other...not was created by chrispysaki
I'm trying to get my girl's '77 kz400 ready for the summer, and the left exhaust pipe is getting properly hot, but the right one is only warm to the touch. Gas is coming out of both petcock tubes and I cleaned the carbs and the plugs, so I don't think those are the problems.

It only uses one coil, could it be possible that the coil is only sending power to one plug? Could it be the ignition timing? I'm going to check the points and the plug wires tonight, but just wanted to see if there were any other possibilities that I should look out for.

Since it uses one coil it must be firing both plugs at the same time (even though on is on the exhaust stroke). I would move spark plug cap 1 to cyl 2 and spark plug cap 2 to cyl 1 and see if the problem moves from cyl 2 to cyl 1. If it does, it's the coil, wire, or cap. Ed

depending on how long it has been sitting it sounds to me like a plugged pilot circuit in the carb will the cylinder kick in at higher rpm's or have you just checked at low speed or idle.with a shared coil and only one set of points it doesnt sound ignition related. i would be pulling the carbs apart agian and just double check that all jets and passages are allowing compressed air to pass thru them. or you could just replace the plug and see if the problem is cured but this time of year and how bad gas is now day's i'd be leaning toward the carbs myself

Thanks, I'll give those suggestions a try. The carbs were pretty clean to begin with, but it never hurts to go through them one more time, right? I did have a problem getting one of the jets out from both carbs - I think it's the needle jet - there was no screw slot, so I just left it in and ran some carb cleaner and air through it.
