Dynatek Ignition Booster Worth the $$$ ? was created by bountyhunter
I have the 750 twin (B4) with points. The ignition has been getting a little iffy lately and I recently put on a new EMGO four Ohm coil I got from Z1 which seems to work well.

I was wondering if I should also add the Dynatek ignition booster:

www.dynaonline.com/skins/products/sportbikes/boosters/

I see these on ebay for $60 while being incorrectly listed as CD (capacitive discharge) units by the sellers. Dynatek does not call them CD, they just call them "boosters". They are actually "low side switch" solid state devices that have FETs or transistors of some kind to conduct the coil primary current to ground and use the points to fire the transistors. So, point current and wear goes way down and rise time of the coil primary current is faster which should give hotter spark. That is probably worth the $60.

Anybody use one of these guys? How big is the unit itself (can't get a dimensioned drawing)?

I was also wondering, do they prevent the DC current flow in the coil with the key on (but engine not running) that sometimes cooks coils?

Thanks

Why spend $60 when you can make your own for about $15 to $20? One of the options is a time-out circuit to shut the ignition off after 5 seconds of non-use. The lower-priced Dyna ignitions tend to not have that option, but I'm not sure about their booster device.

Points to fire an HEI module.

The HEI module can withstand a primary peak of nearly 600v if I recall correctly. That will easily fire a stock KZ. You could use any coil down to about2.5 ohms without hitting the 5.5A current limit.

If you go lower resistance, you'll be hitting the curent limit, wasting power, and heating the HEI with no real gain.

With the long dwell on the points motors, a 3-ohm is probably better suited.

All of the HEI module details are in my notes. The HEI uses good old Darlington's. I have several bikes running them (driven by points and reluctors).

Laziness and this way it comes in a potted module that will withstand vibration better and has it's own mountinbg hardware and heatsink.

I have never come across this product... cool. This could be a cost reduced solution for many riders.

For future reference this is the Pic and Data I found:

Best of success, :)
Bill

PS
If anyone who bought one of these could post the attached instructions and especially the wiring diagram that would be great.

You can download the PDF of the install wiring instructions here:

www.dynaonline.com/skins/downloads/Default.aspx

That's how I knew it's not a CD unit, the module ties to +12V but the + side of the coil primary does also. That means the module just switches the NEG side of the coil primary to ground.
