I'd do this:

1.Disconnect the Negative(-) battery terminal.

2.Open up the right handlebar switch housing.

3.Check for broken wiring or dirty contacts on the start switch.Spray on electrical cotact cleaner should remove the corrosion(NOT WD-40!!!)Watch out for flying springs too.

4.If everything looks good inside the switch, open up the headlight housing and see if some wires are disconnected.

5.I believe two black wires go to the start switch, so check both for being connected.

6.Reconnect the Negative battery terminal and try again.

With a DVM (Digital volt meter)....

Set meter to +20Vdc range (unless auto range sensing)...

Black probe to ground (chassis if well grounded or Batt (-) terminal)...

Red meter probe to red conductor on starter switch.
You should measure +12Vdc or battery voltage... Yes/No?

NOTE: Emergency On/Off switch must be working correctly!

Yes, then press starter button and you should measure +12Vdc on black conductor (not sure of this exact color but...) fed to starter... Yes/No?

If yes, then measure at starter Black conductor from starter switch... Should measure +12Vdc Yes/No...

If yes, then check black conductor terminal for oxidation, rust, build up etc... Clean/replace and re-try.

If not, then switch is not receiving +12Vdc from emergency switch... Note, this is the same voltage supplied to coils!....;)

Here's the schematic/wiring diagram fro a 1976 KZ900-A4... should be ~ the same for not sure of your year and eaxct model number....
