79 kz1000 ST electrical. was created by morhaven
Hi, i have a few question for you great folks

I picked up a 79 kz1000 ST. For Free :)

all the wiring was removed, so I'm gonna have my hands full to see what the problem was.

I will try everything out to see what works and does not.
but have had issue on other bikes with CDI, coils, rectifiers.

But I also have a parts bike. and 84 KZ 750. could I use the CDI coils from that bike if need them?

since the bike was free I don't mind speding a few $$$ .
Should I just buy new wireharness, coils, cdi, regualtor?
Is there aftermarket stuff recommended? entire packages deals?

last question, how can I test the Ignitier to see if it works?

thanks

The filebase has a wiring diagram for a 79 st.

You should get a Clymers or Haynes manual for a KZ1000.They have the wiring diagrams along with everything else about working on the bike.

The factory shop manual is more expensive, but worth it. The testing procedures for all the components are listed there. To find out which bikes use a particular part, go to the Kawasaki website. Under owner info, you will find parts diagrams. Find the rectifier, or whatever part you are interested in, and you can then find out what other modles used that part. There is also a pretty good chance that somebody on this board has tried this already and will give you some sage advice.

It might be a few $ but www.repairmanual.com has factory shop manuals for most Kawasaki's I understand they sometimes sell used manuals too.

Some websites for the electrical connectors:
1. www.easternbeaver.com
2. www.vintageconnections.com
Some websites for electrical harness tapes:

1. www.findtape.com/shop/product.aspx?id=32...&width=1436&height=0

2.Dry Vinyl Tape From Tape Brothers
www.tapebrothers.com

Dry Vinyl Tapes are non-adhesive plasticized polyvinyl chloride film tape. Easy unwinding characteristics - tape clings firmly to it’s own backing for tight wrap. High elongation and good strength to permit trouble-free binding of wiring harnesses for the automotive industry. Dry vinyl tape also used for plating applications- high stretch, good “cling” characteristics and great conformability provide for superior masking in hard chrome and other plating applications.
