Good stuff guys. I did the headlight mod on a previous bike but just added a switch to the controller on the bars. I'm diggin the relay method. Off to print now...

I use Mil-Spec switches for my electrical switching needs.
A double pole double throw switch(DPDT) controls my headlight circuit, part # MS25307-232

For a switch controlling relays, a single pole double throw(SPDT) # MS24523-22 works well for this.

Both switches have a moisture seal where the toggle goes into the switch body. The DPDT has a metal housing with 6 screw terminals on the bottom and the SPDT is housed in a high temperature plastic body with two terminals.

My only reservation with this circuit is that it does not appear to be a fail-to-safe circuit. As I understand it, if the relay's coil fails then the Head Light (High and or Low Beam) turns OFF... ouch in the dark. :S

It would be interesting to see if the same concept could be implemented as a fail-to-safe such that if the relay's coil fails then the Head Light stays ON. [/quote]

It can, I did that. Use a relay with normally closed contacts and wire the lights through them. Then have the relay energize from the 12V line to the starter solenoid and it temporarily opens the relay (turning off the lights) as the starter is engaged.

I like to be able to turn it off when I want to for a variety of reasons.

Now for some reason that just reminds me of my friends who used to shut off their lights (on their car) and lead the cops on a chase over their land, which was very marshy and only had a few ways through it. They once parked across a dugout from a cop and flashed their lights. When he drove in and got stuck they offered to pull him out if he'd rip up the ticket  . Of course this was before they got all trigger happy...
