starter on 1000 ltd was created by terry s
Can I take the starter off without taking the side cover off? I believe my starter is dragging and I am going to take it off to check it out. I put a new battery in and same problem persists. It cranks the engine but it dosen't seem to crank it up to speed. I am starting to have trouble starting the motor because of this.

What year?

For most part, the starter can be removed by simply removing the small starter cover.

Cheers.

yes,you can remove the cover under the carbs(two bolts)then remove the two bolts from the starter and the cable from the batt.and she will slip right out.unhook the batt cable from the batt first tho.

I tried to get starter off and it looks to me I have to pull the carbs or maybe take the cam tensioner off to get it out of there.I had starter loose and tried to wiggle it out of there but it will not go..any help would be nice...

There is a big "O" ring causing the resistance. i wouldn't take the tensioner off. Roy

You have to slide the starter as far away from you as possible, (towards right side of bike) it can be pretty tuff just to get it to pop out. Then carefully lift and wiggle the starter out at an angle.

Good luck!

I had the starter away and and all the way to the right. I then lifted the other end to about a 45 degree till it was hitting the cam chain tensioner and the carb. The left side did not clear all the way out of the hole. I rolled the starter all ways...What am I missing here??? thanks for the help:( ;)

do you have the countersprocket cover off?i think that you will have to remove the c/s cover (and peg and shifter)then it will come out.i forgot that i had that stuff off last time i removed my starter.

Yes I had the countershaft cover off. Did you take the cam chain tensioner off? I have tried and tried and it won't go!!!!!!

dang man,it seems like i do have this foggy memory of removing the cam chain tensioner.sorry i must be suffering from can't remember sh!+.be careful and remove the chain tensioner(you can probably save the gasket)and you should be golden.
the more i think about it you are going to have to remove the tensioner.
it is nothing to sweat tho, with the self adjusting tensioner.i just compress it down and lock it with the bolt(takes a little fiddling because of how the balls lock in the tapered seat, use a paper clip through the hole to hold the spring compressed) then reinstall it and release the bolt then re-tighten it.then i turn the motor over a few times by hand to make sure the adjuster takes the slack up and have never had a problem.hth,
