The early z1 tails were rounder, and the 1000 are somewhat rounder too I believe.
I used a Kawasaki ZX6E tail light, bought off ebay, on my 650 as others have here as well. It fits the tail shape well, mounted up side down.
Brackets need to be made up, but I just used some flat brackets about an inch wide bent to shape.

Does anyone know anything about this tail light from www.americanclassix.com ? They're pretty vague on the details and they don't have any pics of the light installed. I'm looking to possibly use it on my 77 KZ650 (no rear fender). Thanks guys!

But... now that I know the ZX6 tail light fits so well, I'm gonna save a few bucks and get one of those instead. I found one off a 95 ZX6E on eBay for $15. Score!

The picture shown is a yamaha vmax.Nice! Thanks for all the info guys. I emailed American Classix and asked them if they could send me a photo of the light installed so I could get a better idea of the dimensions and such. Honestly, I didn't expect much. But, surprise! They sent me a pic of the light installed on a bike with a KZ650 tail section.
