How much power do HID lights draw? was created by hardr0ck68
In my progess of re-working the bike I would really like to install a HID kit. My bike already finds itself short on juice with the wideband o2 sensor. I hope a change in charging systems will fix this but I also want to install the HID kit.

What are the power requirements for this? How does a HID kit compare to the standard 7" sealed beam?

Thanks for any input!

bought it because I was told it would never run again...I like to prove people wrong.

Ok so as I read it the HID kit runs at 35w 3.5amps

Am I reading that correct? It seems that is only slightly more than the bulb I am running now! 50W (low beam) /60W (high beam). To calculate Amps I divide 60w/12v and get 30amp draw while the high beam is on; correct?

Highbeam: 60Watts, 12Volts = 5.0Amps
Lowbeam : 50Watts, 12Volts = 4.2Amps

The HIDs' accept an input voltage of 9-16Volts.

If the given input Voltage is 12V, and they consume 35Watts of energy, then they will draw 2.92Amps of current doing so.

Hope this helps!

Outch, my crappy math skills make a fool of me again.

Awesome!

So dual HID's it would draw about 70W and 6amps? (at 12 volts)

Thanks for the help.

To me, (I know nothing about the black magic of electrical systems) it seems one HID takes LESS(?) power than the sealed beam, and two are just 10W over my current high beam!

Yessir, thats right.
Sounds like a good setup to me ;)

Much brighter, and safer, for only under 1 amp more...

Cheers.
