kz900 speedometer calibration
23 Oct 2009 18:13
I have a 1976 kz900 that is completely stock and original except for the exhaust. The speedo reads incorrectly. The odometer reads correctly. At 4000 rpm the speedo reads almost 70 mph. Should read 62 mph or there abouts. Is there any way to calibrate it?

G, 2nd Robs' rec, Have seen examples of "resto's" work and they are super.. and may be within His ability to correct. However, offer this, Period guages were often 10 to 15% optomistic at 60 mph. And you may be attempting to correct a flaw which doesn't exist. Talk to the Expert. luck G

Front tire size plays a big part in speedometer accuracy. If your tire is larger than what can stock with the bike, it will read slower and you will have to adjust your riding to compensate.
Keeping the speedometer cable cleaned and lubed with the right kind of grease can also make a big difference.

Thanks for the info so far guys. I will try talking to Z1. As for front tire size, it is a new tire of stock size. If it was of a signifigantly different diameter, the odometer would also be signifigantly incorrect, but it appears to be within a few percent.

Seems like I saw a thread at zrxoa about this. As I recall, the guy repositioned the indicator (needle) on the speedo shaft. This, of course, requires disassembly, maybe more than once.

Thanks for the link.
I was out today with a GPS to check the speedo error. It's out by 10mph throughout most of its range. At 20mph actal, it reads 30. At 50mph actual, it reads 60. At 60mph actual, it reads 73.
Moving the needle on the shaft would appear to be the most pragmatic solution. Over the winter I may attempt this myself.
I bought this bike last April Fools Day for waaaay too much money. And I've put waaaaaay too much more into it since then. Hadn't planned on paying someone to refurbish the gauges for me, but that may be best in the long run. The tach is in error as well.

Well at least you won't get a speeding ticket. I just keep that in mind and do the figuring in my head while riding.
