Not bad at all, I can always get a clear lens from Dennis Kirk and paint it. That will work just fine.

This may not be your cup of tea but I wanted to change my rear and one day while changing the tail lights off my 1966 "Rustang" I noticed how well they fit the back of my 78 KZ.
Im going to try to fab it in soon.
If its not too ugly I will post pics.
I always thought a military blackout tail light would look great

How many passes of spray paint did it take to get the color you wanted? I just got some red lenses off ebay, they're pretty old looking so I may paint some clear ones for a smoke or red lens look.
Thanks,Ken

It's like painting a plastic model. Use thin coats, build up just enough paint to get a fairly smooth appearance then stop and let it dry for about 20 minutes (I set mine in the sun while drying to help the paint flow out). Then go back for a second coat, same thing. Apply lightly to build up and stop when it's just smooth. Let dry 20 minutes between coats.

I was painting amber lenses and I think I did a total of three coats.

I wiped the lenses off with pure acetone first to make sure they were absolutely clean.
