Will the dyna s ignition work as well with lower resistance coils than the green 3 ohm ones? I have read mixed opinions on here. how much of a range is there for ohms that can be used? any thoughts? thanks

I've used all kinds of coils , stock, hot aftermarket and dyna green coils. Thay all worked pretty much the same with the Dyna's the best but they all worked.

You really want to try and keep coils to 3.0 ohm minimum with the Dyna-S ignitions or the coils will run hot.

Dyna puts a limit of 3 ohms on the S. Most likely the output section can't handle the current demanded by lower resistance coils over time.

It's a question of safety margin. When manufacturers design a transistor, they publish the limitations of the parts. They usually allow for a safety margin.

Lets say you have a rope rated at 460 pounds. Sure it will probably hold more, but if you weigh 540 pounds, are you going to use that rope to climb a mountain? (No fat jokes, I chose those numbers for a reason :) )

The Dyna is rated to handle 4.6 amps. You are asking it to handle 5.4 amps. It'll probably work for a while.

Thanks for a very good answer .. I wouldnt think less than 1 amp would make much difference any idea what stock coils are ? I need to get out the meter tomorrow

I´ve been running electronic ignition coils (2.4 - 2.6 ohms) and a DynaS on my 650 for two years now without problems - that being said, I may just have been lucky, new 3.0 ohm Dyna coils are in the mail as we speak.

Stock for electronic ignition is around 2.4-ish. Stock for points is around 4-ish.

Ok, so my stock coils (points) will work fine, and not hurt the dyna s until I get the "green" coils... Right?
