Dyna s static timing problems....HELP!

1980 KZ1000 LTD, Dyna coils and wires, I installed the Dyna S 2-1 ignition. There are timing marks for 1-4 but not for 2-3 on my advance unit, I get the 12v light to illuminate while holding the advancer to full advance (full clockwise)for 1-4 side...now for the 2-3 side what marks do I use? There is a T with a mark on it apx 180 out from the 1-4 side of the unit and using that mark I am unable to get the light to iluminate on that mark. Any ideas?

You should have one or the other, haven't heard of a unit with no 2/3 marks....

Hi Muddy1, great to have you here.

First the disclaimer... I have never worked on a KZ1000 and have never tried what I am about to propose. :unsure:

I have read (but never tried) that the Advancer can be unscrewed and rotated 180 degrees from true. This is usually done by accident and proves hard to troubleshoot. But in this case you could use this trick to do static light timing on the 1-4 marks for the 2-3 timing.

When finished you would swap back 180 degrees to the original position.

Now when you dynamic time the 1-4 the 2-3 timing should follow. Not a perfect solution but should get you real, real close.

1980 KZ1000 LTD B4 model, I am in Hartland Michigan...I finally figuired the mess out, my kz came with electronic ignition, I repalced it with the Dyna s system, the model I have does not have the 2-3 "F" mark all it has is a small "T" with a mark beside it. I measured the distance from the 1-4 side "T" mark to the "F" mark, came to 3/16th of an inch and I marked the 2-3 side with a scribe. I was able to get the 12v test light to illuminate at the mark that I scribed. Installing the new headers now, I will install and sync the carbs in the morning, I am sure I will have more probs...lol Thanks for all the help everyone!

Glad to hear you got it figured out but I still want to hear from the others who've been around these old beauties regarding the advance unit not depicting 2/3 pick ups...

Muddy, do you have any close up pictures of just the advance unit?

After market, non Kawi unit, WTF, Anyone?

Muddy1, now that's interesting... looks like OMR's second pic but with some of the markings missing. Even has the OEM "TEC" stamped in the right place. :blink:

Almost looks like one of the production rejects/errors got shipped by accident... or a sub-contractor had to make their quota that day and let it slip into the shipment... I was in production once-upon-a-time and still suspicious about suppliers, both internal and external. :huh:

Thanks for the pic.

Now I'd try to get a good one from eBay and put this one in a museum or trash can... whichever is closer. :dry:

The stamped number 1009 is correct (Babbitts On Line sku #)

e-bay, the close to same advancer depicts 1/4 & 2/3 markings so weird it is....
