My charging system was poo on my new bike and I determined that it was the stator. For the past few months I have been taking 30 minute rides before the bat was dead and would need to be pulled and charged. I replaced the stator along with an oil and filter change yesterday and holy crap, I was missing out! The bike pulls much harder (might be the new plugs and wires too), my turn signals flash faster and stronger, and low and behold I thought I would miss the auto canceling turn signals from my spectre, bu they are on the LTD as well, I just wasn't getting enough power to utilize them!

The charging systems on these older bikes are designed to maintain a charged battery, so if the battery is sulfated or damaged internally, the rectifier/regulator works at a disadvantage trying to run the system and usually burns out/fails.

THanks. I have a new battery for my 550 spectre, could I use it? The battery terminals look different, thats why I am wondering if it is the same battery. Thanks

If the battery amp hours are the same or close. I'd say go for it. You might have to be creative in the connections though.

I also find that the battery needs to be looked at for water level. Everything on my bike is correct but I do have to add electrolite every 1500 miles. Has anyone tried a gel battery and how do they last?...Russ

I placed a gel in my KZ...

Reasons:
One for AZ heat here is harsh so GEL's in vehicles here usually provide a little longer life...

In my research, motorcycle batteries normally good (as stated mind you) for 1-2 years... Gels may go for another year, maybe two...

NOTE: Of course this also depends on a few factors such as where you live in regards extreme cold, extreme heat, motorcycles condition, conductor sizes and conditions, termination and contact conditions and current load demands etc....

Won't have to worry about water levels and terminal corrosion. Plus new technologies such in CCA & Amp Hour ratings made it he best choice in my case.

Damn it... No edit...

Regarding the GEL... I had to consider my conversion, engine compression increase, cam upgrades etc... and for the fact that I converted to a mono shock system, I had to fab up a new battery tray anyways.

With this in mind, larger CCA and Amp Hour ratings would do just nicely! ;)

So far, no problems what so ever... One tiny push of the start button and the old girl jumps to life....

Could anyone tell me if a "J" stator puts out more juice than a Mark II stator? I am frying my regulator. Roy

if I don't have the boxes to the batteries how can I tell the amp hours? Maybe I could go to the store and ask for one of each bettery just so I can see if the amp hours is posted on the boxes

Batteries used to have the amp hours listed on the cases. Yuasa might have it listed on their website by size of the battery.

CCA and Amp Hour ratings is usually printed on the batery itself...

If not, does it display the model # and maf such as Yusa...?
Then you can seaisly search the Yusa web for specs...

the 550 battery is a Motomaster(Canadian Tire brand) and the 1000 battery is some other brand, like superbatt, or some lame name like that, so I don't think they will ahve much info on them OR a website. I coiuld check the Yusa website for the 550 and 1000 batteries and see if theirs are equal and presume they are for other makers...
