Reserve Lighting Switch was created by grumpy56
Good morning. Any suggestions regarding how to troubleshoot a reserve lighting switch on a 1000J? My "problem" consists of a very dim low beam, the warning light indicating a lighting problem "on", and a high beam warning light that does not function. Tried a new bulb and the shop manual addresses certain scenarios, but not this one. Also, anyone know a source for the reserve lighting switch? My shop manual indicates that it is the brown six pin connector, but pics I've seen of a few on e-bay look like they have a white connector. Thanks.

I just bypassed mine since I installed a HID, Xenon lighting system on the bike. The reserve lighting switch is there only if the low beam burns out then the Hi-Beam turns on at about 6V. I just looked at the weiring diagram and rewired it like one of the ons that do not use the RLS. Not all models have one.

The reason there is a brown and a white connector is because there is a jumper in between. The one on the unit itself is white. Did you try to change both bulbs, the hi-beam warning bulb and the main headlight bulb?

Always check all the related bulbs first. Headlight and warning and indicator.

otakar, could you please post a diagram of how you bypassed the reserve lighting device? I just installed a HID light and am trying to get the failure light to go out. Thanks!!

I found a NOS reserve lighting switch on e-bay and hopefully will have it in a few days. Hope that is the source of my problem as I'd like to keep the stock setup.

Checked everything and I believe my reserve lighting unit is shot. When I bypass it, everything seems to work fine. The unit is located on the front of the battery box below the air cleaner. I assume I have to remove the battery box to get to it. Any other suggestions as I am one lazy old coot? Thanks.

That is the only way I know of. It is very uncommon for one of those to go bad.
