KZ 1100 misfire/tach quits working. was created by D_EDGE
I am working on a 1982 kz 1100. The problem is ocassionaly it will start running really poorly and the tach will stop working at the same time. In the manual it looks like it reads off the 1&4 ignition coil. The coil is new. I've checked connections. Recently the bike has also started sticking at high rpm and hanging around 3k rpm before idling back down. Carbs have been cleaned. appreciate any help. Thanks

High rpm sticking can be caused by at leat two things; a vacuum leak, or a sticking mechanical ignition advancer.

To check for leaks, spray around the ducting(boots)between the carbs and air box with brake cleaner or WD-40. Look at the sync ports too as the rubber caps can age and crack.

The four manifolds between the carbs and engine can develop cracks due to heat.

The ignition advancer is on the right side of the engine under a CD sized cover on the end of the crankshaft. It must be able to retard and advance the ignition as the rpm changes.I use a light oil (three n one) on all pivot areas including the spring attachment places.

Thanks. Anyone know a possible cause for the misfire while the tach is not working?

If you have a mechanical tach(cable driven) I'd suspect cable problems, If electrical, I'd start by tracing back the wiring looking for loose/broken connections. I believe on the electric tachs it reads the left coil for #1 & #4 sparkplugs.
