Hook up a gps unit and compare. Or have your wife follow ahead at a specified speed....Russ

well i checked my speed on a radar equipped speed limit sign that just got put up... it checked out at 25mph and 35mph so my speedo is good but i went on a small road trip yesterday and as i approached redline the tach needle just started bouncing between 10,000 and 8,000 rpms anybody ever deal with this before?

Tach bounce might result from frayed interior tach cable or just need cable disassembly, cleaning and lubing.

If in doubt, replace cable with a new one.

My '81 KZ550D1 has always had problems with the tach and speedo. They jump around quite a bit and are not very accurate. Even after taking the cables out and lubricating them. I bought a new KZ550 in '81 and I remember those gauges jumped around a little, even when new.
