Hi, new to this forum. I have a question that I'm hoping someone here may be able to help me.

I just purchased a 1980 KZ1000 Classic that seems to have a problem with the control box or ECU. The bike will start and run but once its warmed up it stalls and won't start up until it cools back off. I really like this bike and want it fixed right, I'm looking for the ECU or some other way to fix it.

thanks,
dave:(

Well, you could do what many other owners of KZ1000G's do...convert to carbs. The FI was system was notorious for problems...should you decide to keep the FI, watch eBay and start sequentially replacing the suspect units subject to failure...the ECU, the injectors, etc. etc. They all do appear on eBay and are sometimes quite reasonable in price. Buy the kawasaki manual and learn the various testing protocols for troubleshooting the entire FI system.

If you need the injectors cleaned, here's a service:http://www.witchhunter.com/

Guys that have the later FI have installed BS34 carbs on their bikes.

Get a manual. There is a detailed trouble shooting section for your bike.

Could be a sensor. Roy

Get the Manual. I know there is an engine temp sensor, but double check all the wire connections. The Clymers manual M359-3 for that year has section in the back for the electronics on the G model.
"1. with the ignition off disconnect the gray lead from the engine temperture sensor.
2. Connect an ohmmeter set at RX1000: one lead to the sensors grey lead the other to the hex body.
If the meter shows 2100 to 2900 ohms at 72 degrees F the egine temperature sensor id OK. If more or less the sensor is faulty."
Good luck
If you can save the injection system do it. They we rare to start with and are getting fewer all the time. If you do decide to put carbs on it keep the injection system if you ever decide to go back.
