Help? was created by supermandan713
I rode my bike around the block, stopped at a stop sign then all of a sudden all my electric went out. so I rolled my bike back to my garage and checked it out, everything seems to be plugged in and the battery is charged. I have no clue what happened. Any thoughts?

The first thing I'd check would be the fuses, then the battery connections from the RED Positive (+) to the starter solenoid and the BLACK Negative (-) to the frame.

The older glass tubed fuses can fail internally but still look good. They are the AGX type, 1" long available at most auto parts stores. The AGC type which is 1 1/4" will not fit in the fuse clips.

Also the year and size of your bike will make help from this website easier.

The main fuse was blown, so I put another one in, started it up and then let it run for a couple of min, and then it suddenly stopped again and blew the brand new fuse

Souns like a short of some type is blowing out the main fuse. I'd look for pinched wires,or wirng that is rubbing the frame. Some times it's something simple, like either here or another forum I frequent a similar problem was found when the silver turn signal can shorted across some teminals on a riders bike.

Look for the obvious: is some thing loose, did a battery terminal get corroded. On these bikes the negative battery terminal goes to the engine mounting bolt, so all it takes for a short is a "Hot" wire touching the ground and Zap! blown fuse.

Another thing I have seen pop big fuses is a flaky coil. But, shorts in the wiring harness are the most likely culprit.

The wiring may be shorting out if the insulation has worn through somewhere. I would start by examining all the wiring to see if the insulation is damaged.

It may help if you follow the wiring diagram when checking the wiring to make sure the previous owner didn't alter anything. I don't know if your '77 KZ650 is a B1 or C1 (wire wheels/single front disk/rear drum brake = B1; cast wheels, triple disks=C1) but you can find your wiring diagram at the link below (to expand diagram, put your cursor on the lower right corner of diagram and click on arrow box when it appears):

+1 on checking to make sure all the wiring is good, no pinches, worn through spots, etc.

Also, take a look at the fuse clips in the fuse block. Mine was doing the same thing to me a couple years ago and I chased the wiring all through the harness and verified every connection. Wasn't until I polished up the clips in the fuse block that it stopped blowing the fuse. If your clips have any oxidation on them they might just be creating enough resistance to blow the fuse. I polished mine up with a wire wheel on a dremel and haven't had any issues with it in several years.
