85 to 140 MPH Speedometer Change was created by WABBMW
I have a 1982 KZ650 CSR that has the original speedometer. Would like to change to one that reads 140 MPH. My concern is the shape of the housing and how it fastens to the bike. Mine is cylindrical in shape and bolts onto a bar at the 9 and 3 o'clock position. (See photo). Would really like to keep my present housing and perhaps swap the inside parts.

Does anyone know if this can be done? If not possible, then what modifications are needed to make a differently shaped unit bolt on? Also, what years and models featured the 140 MPH unit? Thanks a million.

My photo size was too large, so I took a small one, but now I don't see an option where I can load the photo. AAARRRGGG!!!

I dont know all the years but mines a 78 and it reads to 140. Also if you save your pic in afile name you can remember in your computer, then go to paint wich is also on your pc. When in paint go to that file you saved open it at the top of your paint you will see image sroll down to skew and stretch change percentages to 20 and save. Then scroll over to file scroll down and save as a new file you then should beable to submit into your message.

Bill, I don't think it would be possible to swap the innards since the guages are a different diameter. You could use the entire rack of guages off an earlier 650 but I think you would be looking at having to change at least the upper triple clamp if not both upper and lower. I'm pretty sure any 650 made before January of 1980 will have a 140 speedo. The oldest bike I have with an 85 MPH speedo is my 80 1000 G-1 my 80 650 F-1 was built in 79 and has a 140 mph speedo.

Something to think about if you do this swap would be how it might affect the resale value of the bike. Speedos that are not correct to the model are normally red flags to a potential buyer. When you go to sell it you will have to sell it as TMU and the buyer may think the bike was involved in a bad wreck that wiped out the original guages.

Maybe the KZ1000 Police had a better speedometer that is also electric? I would think the Police would have needed a speedometer that read more than 85 mph...

Here is one on fleabay now:
