Late model electronic ignition... will it fit on my 77 model? I wanted to put an electronic iggy on my bike and I was considering a dyna. I saw a couple of places selling the later model stock electronic setup. Will that work on my older model and what would I need if it would?

tomcat, welcome to the site great to have you here.

Don't know what you have!

If you have a KZ650-B1 like me then the following will fit:
- Dyna S (DS2-2)
- Dyna 3 Ohm Green Coils (DC1-1)

If you would like to see how I installed mine see here:
Link

This is what mine looked like installed:

Notice that I managed to keep my Oil Pressure Sensor wire, Blue/Red Stripe

Best of success. :)
Bill

PS
It would be best if you told us what bike you have. You will notice that many members add their year, model and location to their signatures to get the best responses... and it's considered very friendly too.

tomcat - welcome to the site. You've come to the right place for all your KZ needs! The folks on here are always willing to help, so ask away with any questions. :)

Not trying to hijack the thread, but I gotta say thanks Bill for the link to your wireing mods. Great stuff and will no doubt help in diagnosising my electrical issue. :P

I swear to God, it's like I live in a trailer of common sense, and stare out the window at a tornado of stupidity.

This model would work just fine.

Couple of other different model Dyna ignitions are available which would also work just fine.

Good Luck! :)

If you want to put something like a 1981 ignition on your 77 it can be done, but you will have to change your coils also to 2.2 Ohm coils. the unit should bolt right on otherwise. If you go with the Dyna ignition you can use your stock coils as long as you keep your ballast resistors or you can go to 3 Ohm coils. The problem you will have with the late Kawasaki ignition is the weiring harness. You will have to make your own. On the Dina it is all included.

Yes, your stock coils are fine on 1977 KZ1000, which has no ballast resistor. The ballast resistor came with the electronic ignition introduced on the 1979 KZ1000-A3 with igniter and lesser ohm coils.

Good Luck! :)

You'r stock coils are about 1.3 Ohm and the ballast resistor is about 1.5 ohm this makes them together about 2.8 ohms which can be used wit a 3 Ohm ignition (Dyna). Ballast resistors came on all of the points ignitions to prevent arcing. By themselves the coils are not suitable for any ignition I am aware of.

I retract my statement. Your coils are 4 Ohm and they are OK for the Dyna however they will give a weaker spark, on the 3 Ohm ignition. Patton is right. MI Bad!

Per specifications shown in FSM ---

Primary winding ignition coil resistance on 1977 KZ1000-A1 is 3.2-4.8 ohms. Same for 1978 KZ10000-A2.

Primary winding ignition coil resistance on 1979 KZ1000-A3 is 1.2-1.9 ohms.

Good Luck! :)

What He Said!!!! :silly:   Go with the Dina you will be much better off in the long run. The stock Kawasaki ignition is very good if that is what you start out with. To retrofit to it you are over complicating things unless you have other motives. I don't know why but my 78 Z1R came with ballast resistors. They are not even shown in the weiring diagram in the manual.
