Dyna S install help was created by Bullysee
Hi, I installed a Dyna S on my bike. When I try to do Static Timing I have the test light light up for a good inch of movement.

I can turn the whole plate to the right or the left and the 1-4 timing light does not turn off. The 2-3 test does not come on until I rotate the engine but I get the same thing with that timing. It seems like it is not fine tuned if I can move the plate that far both ways and still have the test light light up.

The bike runs strong and seems to have more power. I now hear a little back fire rumble when I let off the throttle.

Some thing not right?

Thanks for the help

On my KZ900... I had to elongate the ignition plates slotted the screw holes...

Now I had a choice of relocating each pickup but as I observed this closure... It wouldn't have made a difference for I required more than that to reach the F marking....

So out with the drill and stretch those half moon shaped slots for additional adjustments....

Thanks, I can line up 1-4 on the f mark but when try 2-3 it seems to be 180' off. Not sure what I'm doing wrong.

Do I have to turn that little place magnet piece by hand and turn the nut with a wrench at the same time?

There may not be an "f" mark for 2-3. But if there is, it will be 180 degrees away from the "f" mark for 1-4.

I usually take apart the advancer and carefully scribe a line 180 degrees from the 1-4 f mark to create a 2-3 f mark.

No f mark for 2-3 only a T mark. So I will have to measure the distance..

Update:

I measured the distance from T mark to the f 1-4 mark and marked 2-3 with the same distance. Bike starts up nice and strong but I have little back fires at idle 1000rpm and throttle release. Just little ones very slight

Do I use f mark or the advanced marks?

Thanks

For static timing, you will have to use the f marks. If you have a strobe, you can use the advance marks to verify the timing.

Little backfires can be from faulty connections. Did you use the little blue wire connectors that come with the Dyna S? They have been known to cause faulty connections.

(The backfires can from many other things too.)

Thanks loudhvx, I did not use the little blue wire connector. I soldered the wires together.

Thanks guys for the help.
