New (to me) kz750 (sort of) was created by jjdtaylor
My wife bought me a bike for my b-day and I have a few questions:
1) It's titled as a 77 kz650, but it has an '82 750 engine. What's the best way to describe it without having to explain every time someone asks what I ride?
2) The neutral light doesn't come on when the bike is in neutral, but it does flicker when going down the road. Is this an electrical gremlin, or could it have something to do with the engine swap?
3) Turn signals don't work at all, same question as above.
4) The carbs need sync'd; not knowing much about carbs, should I even attempt to do this myself? (shop wants $100)
5) Even with all this, I rode it home (45 min), and aside from being a little underpowered (I assume due to the carbs needing sync'd) it ran great. Any thoughts or opinions out there considering it cost less than $600? (ie did I get burned)
Thanks

$600 for a runner. I'd say that alone means you got your money's worth. Got any pictures to share?

$600 sounds like a pretty good deal to me. I really dont like working with electrical stuff so i would probably just leave it, unless it really bothers you. Hand signals can replace the need for blinkers. Unless you drive a busa every day, the 750 shouldnt feel underpowered to most people, so something must be wrong. As for price, $100 might not be that bad if you dont have the tools to do it yourself, or know anybody with the tools.

Your problem with the neutral light sounds like you may have a bad ground. Check the neg cable coming off the battery and make sure the connection on both ends are clean and tight. This may be what's causing the turn signal problem as well.

Just buying a decent carb synchronizer, like a Morgan carbtuner would cost more than $100.00. I do all my maintenance, therefore, to me is worth it. Once you learn about, synch'ng carbs is easy, and then you can always do it yourself.

All that said, in your case, I would also disassemble and clean the carbs before anything. As probably you don't know if it is lack of synch, or lack of cleaning,..... likely it needs both. Again, this is mostly labor intense, if you research it.
