ignition on a zn700 help was created by sharkynrk
finally getting my project zn700 close to running ( i finished building a new wiring harness for it) and found out the ingition module is flat missing. on ebay people want like $200 for a used box off a zn (#21119-1108 or 9) and that like 2/3 of what I have in the project. I can find easier and cheaper boxes from a kz750 (#21119-1119 or something similar). I know the firing order of all of these model inline fours is the same and the difference is in the curves or physically with plugs and size. does anyone know more on this and can help me out - I really can't afford to spend $150-200 on a freaking used part for a $500 bike

go to a dyna s system and you don't have to worry about the ignition box it is all self contained the only thing it won't have is a rev limiter

while I am sure an upgrade ignition would be nice - I am sure the cost is much greater than what i can afford at the moment

the cost of a dyna s plate will be cheaper than buying a replacement ignition box of that i'm sure.

that is a complete controller all you need is the plate all that is needed is the plate and after a while if you so decide you can also add a rev limiter if needed the dyna s plate you should be able to get anywhere try z1 enterprises.

looked on z1 - its for $120 which is quite a bit more reasonable, however my bike is an 84 and already has electronic ignition stock so i don't think it will work as its to replace points

It's a matter of the advance mechanism. If your advance is done electronically, the Dyna S won't work. If your advance is mechanical, a Dyna S will work, but you will need 3-ohm coils too ($100 to $200). Yours are probably 2.4 or 2.5 ohm.

EDIT: I just checked. Yours is electronic-advance. In order to use a Dyna S, you'd have to buy a mechanical advancer from a KZ 500, 550, 650, or 750. Then verify the advance curve. (And you'd still need new coils.)

Another option is to get the advancer and pickup plate from an early (81 to 83) KZ550 or 750. That'd probably run $50 on ebay. Then make an igniter for about $35.

You could still use your stock coils.
