78' 1000 charging output?? was created by codsack
I just got my bobber about done and I'm working out lil bugs here and there. What should the battery show when running? I'm gettin about 12.05-12.20 while running. I had 13.4 before when using a car battery and just test running the motor, but that was without a headlight.

Another thing...2 different wiring diagrams show 3 yellows, 1 black, and 1 white/red for the rectifier. They show the black going to black/yellow which is a ground color, and I didn't see any white/red and the black has close to 12 volts on it while running. Whats the deal and am I safe with just above 12 volts while running?? thanks ahead of time....the fish.

it should have about 14.5 volts at 4000 rpm if your not getting close to that you have problem you can't check it at idle. the charging sytem has very little output at low speeds.

C, off the cuff. all the 1000's I'm familiar with use a 3 phase 3 wire stator output. generating a 7-120 vac per leg. depending on eng rpm. these 3 wires (usually white or yellow ) are sent to either rectifier then regulator , or a reg/rect.(as i believe your' case). red/white should feed directly to battery, (for charging) and via a hot leg to system power. black should be ground, and no voltage should appear. even at idle, you should have @ 13 vdc across battery terminals. voltage at ground wire indicates blown diode/s in rectifier. hope this helps. g

To check the alternators output, follow some simple steps:
1.Fully charge the battery as this will be the ignition's power source during this test.

2.Disconnect the electrical plug that goes to the rectifier/regulator.

3.Get a multimeter and with the range set at A.C. Volts, the range at 250,start the engine, let it warm up.

4.Get a helper as testing the output and holding the rpm's up will be difficult by yourself.

5.Take the engine up to 4000 rpm,and check all three combinations to the yellow wires coming from the output of the alternator(1-3,2-3,1-2) it should be about 50 Volts A.C. if any of the three phases are low the alternators stator has a problem. The website www.electrosport.com has a trouble shooting page for more information.

I'm definitely not gettin 14 at 4 k rpm. 12.25 and holding is all I got. I'm gonna check the 3 yellows in the sequence as mfolk suggested and see whats up.

Hoping the car motor was not running with its battery jumped to the bike.

Good Luck! :)

Naw, the battery wasn't in a car....I didn't have a battery for the bike at that point. I still have to check the 3 yellows in the sequence mentioned above....thanks again guys.

Well, she's charging to 14 v at 4000 rpm now. I had 1 more black wire in my electical box, and after checking it out, it turns out that it was my ground for the rectifier/reg. She's good to go and thanks for all the tips on checking out the alt./stator. later...the fish.
