so all this time I've been chasing a rpm breakup at 7K and I thought it was carb related. I have jetted up and down and messed with needle positions now for a week and I am finally thinking it is ignition.

My left coil is brand new, the right coil is OEM but has newer spliced wires, the plug boots are all new.

Now down on the right side I still have points. So far the points LOOK ok, I just got done rechecking the gap and timing and that all appears good. I pulled the advancer off and disassembled it, wire brushed it and lubed it up. Springs seem good, it all seems normal, but there's gotta be something going on down there to make it do what it's doing at high rpm.

no signs of arcing anywhere on the coil wires. I have full battery voltage to the coils as well.

gotta be something I'm missing....

I'm wondering if you're not possibly grounding out at high rpm to the coil mounting fasteners. You mentioned a new coil on the left, what brand? a Dyna, with a stock coil on the right side?

On the Dyna coils(at least on mine) the primary wires are held to the coils with I believe 10-32x5/16" screws. Anything longer will bottom out before the screws get tight giving a false sense it's good.

What kind of wire terminations are on the primary wires? Did you crimp new ones or solder the ones that came with the new coil?

The hot wire and ground wire are soldered onto the coil. its just a stock replica replacement off ebay for 49 bucks. The 2 screws holding the coil in place seem to be seated correctly. The new coil has matching bullet connectors, and of course I have a new wiring harness on the bike. Its an ebay harness but it was off a low mileage bike - the wires are all still very pliable and the connectors were bright with no corrosion.

I'm thinking it might be down in the points, not sure though. Everything down there is clean and corrosion free

Will it miss with no load on the engine or does it have to be going down the road? Might be points bounce causing this problem. How new are the points? Possible capacitor breakdown at high rpm?

thats what someone at work said, points bounce. It doesnt have to be loaded, it will do it while sitting at the stopsign if I rev it up.

points and condenser were on the bike when I got it.

I would just buy the dyna points eliminator from Z1, BUT some guy called and wants to buy the bike, so I am going to have to sell it to him "as is"
