This is related to both spark and carb jetting, but since it directly relates to spark I'm pretty sure it belongs here (MOD: please feel free to move it if required).

While reading spark plug color is a good way to tell if your bike is running lean or rich, I've heard it's also not 100% accurate (when does TAN become BROWN, etc?)

Well, here's the fancy, $$$$ way of doing it:
Colortune Analyzer

Has anyone ever used one of these before, and what's your view on it?

That ColorTune is not a bad solution, and not to expensive, a better way is using a wideband O2 sensor and controller with digital read out (more expensive), and the best way is a four gas analyzer and a eddy current dyno (way more expensive).

It's possible to get a satisfactory state of tune just reading plugs though, but it takes a whole lot more time and effort (experience helps a lot).
