Dyna coil fabrication was created by brianpclarke
Hello guys!

I am sure you are all tired of hearing me rattle on.. but I have yet another question.

I recently bought a 1976 kz900 LTD... (awesome awesome bike!), and am in the process of upgrading the ignition to dyna. Have the Dyna S in, and trying to install the coils (3.0 ohm green ones). It doesnt seem as they bolt directly on, so before I bring the dremel out and starting cutting away, I was wondering if anyone has a more wise idea of mounting them on... maybe with pictures???:)

I have read in the forums of drilling some holes out in the original bracket and all... but it seems as though I may have to cut the original bracket a little to fit the coils snug and mount something to bring the coil out an inch or more...???

Again, THANKS for all your help!
-Brian

Yeah, I read through the forums... but for some reason the search feature wont let me go to page 2..3..etc. Tried using different words on each search, but, maybe it is just me??

EDIT: Found OMR's pics... Thanks!

Also I see that the coils are facing up... does this increase a risk of a spark hitting the gas tank?

don't worry about that that is why they have rubber and silicone coverings also believe it or not you have plenty of room and they won't touch. that is exactly how they are mounted.

Got it... and to think I was gonna go in there and start hacking away with a dremel... From now on I am just going to search "OMR ....":)

I read through the instructions and it said that there was no polar difference when connecting the wires... so it doesnt matter which screw the constant 12v runs to and which screw the timing wire runs to? I didnt see any markings.. but maybe I missed them.
Also do both cylinders 1&4 spark simultaneously as well as 2&3? Wondering if it matters which order the spark plug wires are in the coil... as long as they correspond to 1&4, and 2&3 respectively.

1 and four are on one coil and 2 and 3 are on the other it has what is called a wasted spark when it fires one cylinder just before tdc it also fires on the exhaust stroke of it's twin. and it doesn't matter which one is in which position just as long as they are the pair and also have the right trigger wire feeding them.

Thanks! I have them all synced up with the Dyna S and the correct timing... I made myself stop looking at the Z1 site a little early and forgot to order the wires... .. so they are coming in the mail tomorrow. If I look at the Z1 site too long I find myself eating canned tuna and peanut butter for the next 2 weeks...

But it doesnt matter which order the wires are in that power the coils? Just wondering if I read the directions right. They are the green 3.0 ohm dyna coils. One is the constant 12v and the other triggers the spark...

I just wanted to double check this... would suck to screw it all up.

yes you read it right they don't care which way they are hooked up, that being said some coils do have a certain polarity but not these ones.

Would assure coil primary terminal screw heads don't short out against the coil bolt spacers. Several alternatives to insulate between screw head and spacer. I use two small zip ties around each spacer.

Good Luck! :)

The shorting out happened to me the other night when I was statically timing mine. Found it weird that they would make them like that as I'm sure a lot of people will run into that problem. Even a lower profile screw head would have helped. I ended up blowing the fuse thats in the WG Coil mod.

A very simple way to prevent the primary terminals from shorting out is to cover the mounting bolt head and the spacer in heat shrink, that's what I did anyway - the spacer is just a piece of alu tube cut to length, guess you could fab a nylon spacer and do away with the heat shrink.
