Starter Relay? was created by emaxxima
I have a 79 kz650 and I got no spark. It seems like there is no power going into the coils, does the starter relay supply power to the coils?

emaxxima, no... the coil power does not come from the relay (solenoid). The solenoid is used to provide high current from the +12 Vdc Battery terminal directly to the starter. This only works well with an equally good and direct -12 Vdc Battery terminal connection to the engine body.

On a stock KZ650, the coil voltage is routed through the following:
1) 12 Vdc Batter (+) Positive terminal.
2) 20 Amp Main fuse,
3) Ignition switch.
4) Engine Stop (Kill) switch,
5) Ignition Coil terminal. Either terminal as they are not polarity sensitive.

Therefore check:
1) The Battery terminal connection,
2) 20 Amp fuse and especially fuse holder (a known failure point) and be prepare to convert to a newer blade type fuse assembly). This is how I did my fuse holder upgrade:

3) Ignition switch function (they are known to fail in 30 year old bikes, but not very expensive to replace),
Here is a switch from one of my better suppliers Z1 Ent:

4) Be prepared to clean, fix or replace. (If you attempt to clean or fix be prepared to catch flying ball bearings and springs, don' ask).
5) Terminal is very close to the brass Coil mounting spacer and is reported to short during rain and or when frame flexes under hard use. Be prepared to cover spacer with shrink tubing or replace with a nylon spacer. See here for the shrink tubing solution.

Coil Terminal Short

Long-story-short, you are an ideal candidate for the WG Coil Repowering Mod. (Only about $10 CAD in parts).

See here for WG Coil Repowering Mod.:

See here, diagrams and pictures, for how I implemented the WG Coil Repowering on my bike:

Best of success. :)
