Hmmm, perhaps a 15V zener diode across the power lead to the Dyna S might offer good protection.

Man, I've got NO idea what you just said Nate!!! Maybe a schematic to help out those of us who are electrically ignorant? :silly:

A, A reference to an antiquated form of voltage/current regulation which was used on 6 & 12 volt positive grounded (primarily) English machines abandoned most probably while most here were in diapers, IE a pun. G

A 15Vdc zener diode will keep the voltage at 15Vdc as long as the charging circuit is at or greater than 15Vdc... Think of it as a voltage regulator...

The downfall of that concept is if you do have a problem with your charging circuit, you won't know it while that zener is installed....

Personally, FIX the problem with the charging circuit for as it was designed for there's more than the ignition circuitry counting on that being correct... ;)

And yes, I do have a degree in electronics...

My charging system on the 650 is tip top. NOS stator, replaced the reg and rec with units from www.oregonmotorcycleparts.com . I charge at 13.7 at idle and 14.6 at anything above 2500 rpm. So long as that system stays within spec I shouldn't have to worry about frying a planned Dyna S then should I?

Won't work or at least not for more than a second. A typical 15v, 1W Zener is only rated to sink about 66 milliamps before it goes up in smoke. The Lucas regulators used this laughable method of regulation and we know how well those worked (and those were very high wattage Zeners with massive heatsinks).
