check the output at around 3000 rpm and see what you have then 14-14.5 at idle seems high and the rectifier/regulator will get warm that is why it is made from alloy and has cooling fins max out-put shouldn't be much higher than 14.5 volts

the reg/rec will feel warm to the touch but not uncomfortable. for now you should go thru all of the wiring connects and do a clean up. fuse box, light sockets, et all. if you see a plastic connect cover that is brown or black, that connect is dirty/corroded.

I use a very good electrical contact cleaner/preservative made by Caig Labs in San Diego called De-oxit. Their website is www.deoxit.com

Get some 400-600 grit sand paper,a brass bristle brush and some time to kill as cleaning the electrical connectors can consume some time for a good job.For the female "Bullet" connectors I find a pipe cleaner sprayed with De-oxit will remove the green crud of corrosion.

Check the fuses and fuse clips for corrosion too as they are important in voltage regulation.
