starter solenoid
18 Mar 2009 03:53 - 18 Mar 2009 10:08
Anyone have any advice on a starter solenoid? I've got to get/rewire one and not sure what the best route to go is. Anyone tried an old ford solinoid? I see Z1enterprises has one but a ford one is half the price.

The riding lawn mower shops are another place to look. Take your old one along and see what might work.

ANY solenoid will work. Two questions need to be answered, though:
1) how much power does the coil draw when energized ?? You may exceed the fuse capacity by using a solenoid with a coil that's TOO powerful. This COULD be a consideration when trying to sub in an automotive type solenoid.
2) are the main contacts durable enough to handle the starter loads on your bike without burning out every second week...or every second month, for that matter. Remember, you've got a 600 watt DC motor on the end of that solenoid and that really sucks the juice while turning over, so the solenoid contacts have to be suitably sized to carry such a load.
My .02 worth....
