Why doesn't my start button work? 1982 Kz750 N1

WE started the bike without the start button, but can't seem to get the start button to work. There is no gauge cluster and nothing plugged into the 9 pin plug for the gauge cluster. Also- we can't get the headlight to get power either- we suspect this is part of the gauge cluster issue as well?

Will the start button work without the gauge cluster on a 1982 KZ750 N1 "spectre" ?

boy thats a tough one ..as i have little elec knowledge...but when my starter does'nt work usually...it is a black wire disconected either under the tank or around under/seat/sidecover area...check through the harness and see that all black /black -yellow stripe..wires are connected...a black male or female end just dangling usually clues me in....dif bike and not much help...just thoughts......can you get a set of guages from a same year bike on e-bay?????.take a note of the colors/prongs/conector shape..and start searching for your model then search any kawi from that year or near and see if they are a generic item/shared among dif bikes.......you may find that it is not gonna complete a circut without the guages????.....good luck......craig

Trace the wires back from the clutch switch and it will probably go into the headlight housing. Splice both wires together and this problem goes away. The only down side is now the bike will start in gear without the clutch disengaged.

Okay- fixed! My best friend is an electrical diagnostic Mand fing genius, really. So, he fixed the clutch switch, the tabs were broke, but he was able to fix it with some judicious carving of plastic with a razor blade, and a little heat, the tabs are fixed. The headlight was no more than a broken wire halfway down the harness.

The electrical system is pretty much fixed, except the rear brake pedal- now I need a pic! :(
