How do I rebuild the speedometer? was created by Alabaster
My speedometer needle bounces past 45mph. The face is broken and needs to be super glued together. Neither the odometer or trip counter work and when I spin the reset wheel on the trip nothing engages. I only see a small phillips head screw on the back. If someone has rebuilt one or knows of a rebuild kit please let me know. Thanks

wireedgeorge has a link on his website. A guy out of Georgia I think specializes in the KZ gauges.

Alabaster, Que moto est? Complete inst. clusters for 650's are still cheap and bolt up to (900/1000's) a bouncing needle is often due to a dirty/poor cable/drive. opening a speedo is accomplished from the top. a task I've failed at. Luck G

It's a '79 KZ1000 LTD. I don't think its the cable because the face is cracked, the trip reset dial is broken, and the tach is doing the same thing. It wont go over 5,000 RPM. I think I'm going to need a replacement set.

AL, Many things possible. Our meter movements are just that, spinning cables connect to magnets which interface w/windings which cause needles to register.wear, friction, contaminaton, are all likley culprets. cables which wind-up and release. what ever. The thing is, Parts are not easily available, the tools/understanding rare. In cases where origionals are desirable, pay the man. if a $40.00 dollar Ebay set's you up w/guages which glow blue-green and work, ride on G

You can send the speedo and tach to zresto and they come back looking like these. Cost per gauge is about 100.00 or a little less.

Yeah, they are pretty awesome. I can't believe he does the work so reasonably. Try and get the gauges redone on an old Triumph..... Just make sure when you reassemble that you use a good amount of weatherstripping for padding (available at your local autoparts store) or the equivalent or your needles will fall off after "x" amount of miles. The old padding discentigrates after 33 years. :) After installing the refurbished gauges they should flex very easily when you try and twist them if that makes sense. If they are rock solid and have no flex, you didn't install them right... Someone did a bunch of "improvements" on mine somewhere during the past 30 years (yeah right) :) You may want to get new grommets as well. I believe they are still available from Kawasaki. Just look at the parts diagram and reinstall exactly as shown.

The article on our website is not intended as a rebuild acticle; only a clean up the glass type article. I have no idea how to disassemble the gauge itself. I have broken every needle I have attempted to remove. I think both the tach and speedometer take the mechanical turning of the cable and turn it into magnetic force to make the needles move. I am not really sure how they can be adjusted. I do think Bob from ZResto can do some adjustments to ensure they work right. If you go to Mid-Ohio, Bob and his wife are there about every year and will be in the area of the Z1 Enterprises tent area.
