While I did recieve the title to my KZ440, I didn't recieve a key. What are the best options for getting all the locks replaced? Would it be easier to have a locksmith make a key for the current locks? Never dealt with keymaking sans an original.....

You can get a key made, if you know the key number. It's on the key (no help) but it might also be on the lock. Mine is something like 752.
If you can get the lock number, then check the archives under 'key' in the subject. Lots of keymakers there.

To be honest, it would be a lot cheaper to just have a locksmith make a new key.
A new lockset (IF it's still available from Kawi) would probably cost you about $100 or more!
And trying to find a complete set on eBay is near impossible.
One thing you might want to try first is this:
Assuming all the locks are the originals and use the same key (actually, almost any key will open the gas cap lock on the older Kawis), remove any one of those locks and you will find a number stamped into it somewhere.
It should be a 3-digit number, and is the key code number for the pre-cut key to fit that lock(s).
Best bet is to check with an older Kawi dealership, as they'd be more apt to have some of the older pre-cut keys still in stock.
I think they cost about $5 or $6 each.

Locksmiths are great people! I should know, I am one. ;)

If the locks are not damaged, it may be easy to have a key made from the code number. There usually is a code number on the Ignition Cylinder somewhere. On older bikes it was in plain site for everyone to see, next to the keyhole. The manufactureres finally got smart and started to put the code number on the back or side so you can't see it by glancing. Check for the number and with a Locksmith in your area. If you can't find anyone, I may be able to help you.

Just bought an 82 KZ250 project/salvage bike. P.O. had had papers and keys stolen during a house burglary. Bike's in pretty good shape, and I do hope to make a runner out of it. Am taking steps to retitle the bike, but I'd like to figure out the key issue.

I understand from searching the forum that the gas tank "lock" is probably not a lock, per se, but will work with pretty much whatever the ignition key is.

So, for the '82 KZ250, I need to find a three-digit key number on the ignition? And once I find that number, there should be a pre-made key that will fit, and some locksmiths and/or dealers may have that key? Please let me know if I've got it right.

Thanks,
Chris

You are right, in that the code number should be on the back or side of the Ignition lock. A dealer may have pre made keys, where as a Locksmith will cut a key using the code info.

Your code should fit in one of the series below:

Kawasaki Key Code Series

170-174
175-195
176K-250K
251K-325K
3101-3150

326K-400K
401-470
701-720
706-710
751-795
8001-9000
801-845
901-925
