reproduction wiring harness
13 Jan 2009 17:06
as i now have a running bike again, i guess its time to stare fear and apprehension square in the eye...
i have a minor laundry list of electrical maladies..
no running lite
no speedo or tach lite
when i hit either brake, brake lite failure lite comes on.
this one is recent and probably due to tank removal/install..
i m thinking the best way is just to replace main
harness and whittle it down from there...even the working stuff is about 31 years old and at this point i have replaced or refurbished enough and spent enough that i should just make it ALL right..
redline cycle has repro harnesses for about 130...
they fit 77/78 A models, but they claim to adapt
for b2 models....does anyone know what adaptations are needed?
also i see what looks like the same damn harness
on ebay for about half and they claim to be the manufacturers....anyone have any knowledge of these?
i also saw a post about color wiring diagrams but cant seem to find it..
i m not looking forward to this, but its gotta be done.....as always thanks in advance for help and advice....keith

Isn't that break-light failure light supposed to come on when you apply either brake?
I have a coloured diagram for the KZ900 if you want,I can post it again.

What is a "brake light failure" light? On the KZ650 the red brake light indicator on the idiot light panel comes on whenever you hit the front or rear brakes to show the brake lights are working. If it doesn't come on your brake lights are not working. Ed

Keith, A quick perusal af my KZ650 B1 manual indicates that Brake ind. should come on when ft/ rear brakes are in use. and flash if brake lite is non -op. G

yeah i think it flashes when it's disconnected or the bulb/bulbs go....at worst it will show the brake staying on....did you look in the top leftof the home page under kz information and "filebase" for your color elec schemeatic page....my lights on some of my instruments werre just old burned bulbs inside the speedo /tach housings/or in the key tower lights and i was in there for some speedo and tach swaps and had extra bulbs so i tried em...all is like new at night now...i know you prob know this stuff ...just my 2 cents....peace.....p.s
some guy saw me working on wires at work one day and started saying how reproduction harneses were the ticket on his old brit bike and how cheap the old wires were in quality...said the new stuff is better and like 75 bucks....got me thinking a bit....

Yup, a new reproduction harness is on the list for the z1 this winter, the wiring is so butcherd on that bike, especially because some one wired in a windjammer SS fairing.
