Dyna S ignition upgrade/igniter question was created by fredgarvin42
I have a 1980 LTD 1000 and am considering getting the Dyna S ignition upgrade with the green 3 ohm coils. My bike currently has some type of electronic ignition and had 1.8 ohm coils. I replaced the coils since one of the was open on the secondary with 2.7 coils and it ran for about a day. Now it appears the igniter is gone (no voltage at the coils. I have power but no ground). I've been trying to get the scooter running on the cheap but I'm running out of options

If I get the Dyna S setup does that eliminate the need for the igniter?

Yup, you can't even mess with the timing on the 80 with stock plate. At the same time maybe you should pick up a 79 timing advancer so you can time both 1&3 as well as 2&4 as with the 80 it doesn't have the marks for both. Then you can fine tune the timing.;)
I replaced the stock ignition on my bike with the dyna s and removed the coils, igniter and ignition plate along with the advancer. Replaced that with the 79. Or if you prefer to stay stock my stuff was working just fine when removed.

fg42, if you are satisfied that your OEM Igniter has really failed then consider the Dyna S.

Kawasaki shows an LTD listed as a KZ1000-B4 in 1980 and it was OEM with an Igniter:

Kawasaki Ignition Link

This is where I got mine:

Z1 Ent Ignition Link

You may need a different model:

"Dyna-S Electronic Ignition DS2-1 - Kawasaki Z1 KZ900 KZ1000"

This is how I installed mine. Check closely for your model. If in doubt, call them:

Dyna S Install Link

Note that this diagram also includes the WG Coil Repowering Modification on a separate fuse circuit to help with troubleshooting/maintenance. You need WG Mod either way and it's under $10 USD. Don't ask how I found out.

Best of success. :)

PS
Add your year, model and location to your signature. It really helps in getting the best responses and it's considered real friendly too.

You're speaking my language (cheap) :D

It's a whole lot cheaper to make your own igniter, and if it ever goes bad you can repair it or make another one.

Thanks everyone!!! Yall rock!

Gonna order the goodies tomorrow morning. The H.E.I tip is a REAL good one but I'm going to go ahead and get on the ramen diet for the month and get the Dyna S, coils, wires, plugs. I will also do the WG wiring trick as well.

I took the tip of adding my bike info, location, etc. I'll also get a pic up there as soon as I get it put back together.

Peace

eat ramen for another 2 weeks and pick-up the drl300 rev limiter from dyna as well. it keeps it from over reving and could save an engine if you ride hard like i do.

fg42, don't need to wait until the project is done to post pic's. The journey is everything. Consider before, during and after Avatar shots.

Thanks for all the killer feedback and info!!!

I've installed the Dyna-S system with the green coils. Just need to make up the wires. Well, coulda been too much spaten optimator that made me to lazy to finish the plug wires. Going to wrap it up today or tomorrow and will post the results. I will also be doing the wiring fix too but not this weekend.

I may get to upgrade my meal plan from ramen to grilled cheese and V8 next Friday. YAY!

All good! Finished the wires and rode it all weekend. It rides great and the sputtering when cold problem also disappeared. It is a very well mannered scooter now! JOY!!!

Next. Fix an oil leak, ride, fix the starter, get a header, ride, etc...

Thanks for all your help!
