Rectifier/Regulator Problem?!? was created by TeK9iNe
Hey all its been a while...

Just working on my bike right now. Its in pieces everywhere around here!:P

I've got a strange sort of problem... i think.
When I start my bike it starts fine and warms up normally.
It then idles at my set 1200rpm after bout 4-5mins.

If I unplug my regulator/rectifier unit and start the bike it starts like its being jumped! Warms up quicker, and once warm, it idles at aroung 16rpm??!!??

Wha?? Is this normal?

The regulator rectifier works fine, I've checked it numerous times. It charges the battery fine and the batt doesnt get hot. it maintains a constant 12.34V when everythings off, when at 4000rpm its at 14.24V.
I had my shop frind test it on an osci-scope - OK.

New alt. Voltage from alt is good and not grounding- all three wires. I have the wiredgeorge coil mod - exact as spec'd.

Cheers!! :cheer:

If your charging system is working why unplug the rectifier? Am I missing something.

16 rpm?
How?
If you mean 1600 then there's an easy explanation....
In generating elec, the power comes from the engine, remove that load, rpm goes up.

Yeah I meant 1600rpm. Had the Rect/reg unplugged for something and just discoverd this...

Would the engine output drop that much, just from power generation?

Sounds fishy... I replaced the stator with a used one from another bike a little while back. Its been charging and keeping Volts proper.

I dont know... anymore ideas?

Yes.

That's one of the reasons that cars have Idle Air Controllers, step the idle back up when electrical load kicks in.

Takes about 3 hp to drive that alternator at full output.

A HA! Thank you.

So no wonder it drops the rpm's so much at idle...

Cheers buds! B)
