ok now I have to re-phrase my question. Mine is missing the headlight "on - off" lever. But all the ones on ebay that I look at dont have that lever either.

so did this bike not have a headlight on - off control, just hi-lo settings???

I don't believe the models sold in North America had an "off-on" switch for the headlight....just the "hi-lo" switch. The "on-off" feature was deleted on most bikes starting with the '75 or '76 model year. If you were absolutely mad to have such a switch, you'd have to look in Europe because they kept that feature well into the 80s on most of their bikes.

mine has the slot, and the ON OFF markings but nothing inside.

hey I was reading your post about starter clutches. How hard is it going to be to get mine out of my 78 650?

it is not a terrible job to do the starter clutch. some will say to do the job with the engine in the frame, but i have always taken it out. basically you pull the oil pan off. clutch cover, then the clutch basket, little round thing by the clutch push rod. pull out the idler shaft and it all falls out the bottom of the motor. (thats the cliff notes, you really should have a manual)
hardest part for me was to peel out the money for new parts. it will need at least the springs and rollers. two of the four i have done also needed the hub, they had cracks where the clutch rollers go in. i think the springs and rollers are about 45-50 dollers? and the whole assembly is about a 100$.
i fixed mine and i still use the kick start most of the time, kinda think i wasted my time.
