Headlight: Sealed Beam vs H4 lamp was created by shighley
Hi All; I'm looking for a new replacement for my KZ650's headlight. The glass has become fogged and I don't want to try to clean it going thru the hole where the H4 lamp sits. My question: Where can I buy a correct Stanley unit? I went to Z1 Ent. and they offer the sealed beam versions, so no help there. I doubt the stealer's could help me as the stock unit was sealed beam (I think). Anyone know for sure? Thanks and ride safe, STeve

The originals were 50/35 watt sealed beam, part number 23007-041. There's one on ebay now, but the connector looks rusted.

bulb

Keep in mind, the originals are not Halogen, so they are not as bright as a modern bulb. I've been using Wagner Halogen (standard) sealed beam units (H6024) for quite a few years now, and even though the wattage is a bit higher than stock, it hasn't hurt anything and I highly recommend them. My experience has taught me to use a bulb rated at 60 watts or less. I had used H4 bulbs in a Marchal lens years ago and was tempted by the bright side to put in a 100w H4 bulb. This did overheat one of the connectors, but brother was it bright while the fun lasted!

it's easy to clean them out
i use two paper towels a half drop of dish soap and hot tap water, get it all in there and shake well, when your tired of shaking, dump it in the sink and rinse, shake rinse till all the bubbles are gone
get some distilled water for the final rinse, then set it in a warm place to dry with the hole down and some ventilation
should look like new

If it is a standard 7" round lamp with a three prong connector, you can use the halogen sealed beam unit. I have been running one for about 25 years and they put out about 3X light over stock. The selaed beam units are available in wattages of about 40/55W to about 50/60W so they will drop right into your system and not blow fuses.

BTW, the original on my '79 KZ750 was not sealed beam, it was hollow with bulbs and dim as a firefly.

You can also get a 7" sealed halogen at WalMart in a pinch if needed.
