Plug gap with dyna
13 Nov 2008 09:11 - 13 Nov 2008 09:11
Seems like I read somewhere and it might have been here that you open the gap more when you use the dyna ign.
Do you run a diff gap on the plugs when you go to the dyna ign.?

On my old 77 KZ1000 had points and I wasn't crazy about the maintenance. I purchased what was then a "hot" ignition system called a "Gerex", I believe the spark was so intense the plugs were gapped for really large openings and it ran well.
any new sparkplugs had to have the ground terminal straightened out and then bent for 0.65 clearance.

I don't think there's any need to go wild with the gap. I just take them out of the box, if the tip isn't bent normally they about .032" which works fine.
321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

My Clymer Manual says ("stock" Gap with 5 Ohm Coils):
SPARK PLUGS... stock Gap 0.028-0.032 in. (0.7-0.8 mm).
KZ650.INFO says ("with Dyna" Gap):
- Replace points unit with a Dyna S or Dyna III electronic ignition or equivalent.
- Fit Dyna coils (3.0 ohms) and wires, gap spark plugs to 0.032–0.035 in.
Dynatek site (for HD's only) says:
What should I set my spark plug gaps to?
The gap settings listed below can be used as a starting point to obtain satisfactory performance with our ignition system. Any benefit from running larger or smaller gaps will need to be determined by experimenting with your particular engine combination.
Single Fire - Single Plug: .035 to .040
Single Fire - Dual Plug: .022 to .025
Dual Fire - Single Plug: .035 to .040
Dual Fire - Dual Plug: .035 to .040 - When wired so each coil fires a plug in each cylinder.
Dynatek site (for Metric bikes) says:
- ... moot.
I read the above as saying:
- stock is max. 0.0320 in. (0.800 mm)
- w/Dynatek is 0.0325 in. (0.825 mm)
So I conclude that the Plug Gap can stay OEM or if you're really picky add 0.0055 in. (0.025 mm).
Anyone come up with something else?
Best of success.

I've a old dyna s, coupled w/andrews "blue goose" coils, I forget the exact spec's but think they snap at @ 60kv. I run .036 gaps simply because I can figuring a larger spark should provide a better burn. But frankly have noticed no difference in running.G
