Dyna vs OEM Electronic

Would there be any advantage of using a Dyna S on a 1980 KZ1000 that already has an OEM ignitor?

I figured coil and wire upgrades would still be helpful, but not sure on the DYNA S - and I have no need for the upscaled Dyna programmable system.

The IC ignitor has a history of faiures and can quit with little or no warning. If it were me the Dyna S would be my choice as everything you need is under the cover on the crank and not having more connectors to fail.

The advantage to a Dyna S is that it has a much longer dwell angle. This gives more spark energy at higher RPMs. A stock engine, in good condition with proper jetting, shouldn't need this, though.

The downside to the Dyna S is that it uses a lot more power, especially at lower RPMs, where that power is just wasted as heat in the coils. It also heats the coils more than a stock ignition would. The other major downside, in my opinion, is that when the bike is turned on, but not running, the coils and ignition are cooking away power. The stock system uses almost no power in that condition.

The Dyna is good for the price, though, and I'd recommend it second only to a good OEM unit.

The main advantage of a Dyna S is that it was made in 2008 and the main disadvantage of a stock IC Igniter ignition is that is was made in 1980 (or 1979). If you had 30 year old underwear and new underwear, which would be more likely to have holes in it?

When I rebuild a bike, I contact Z1Enterprises.com and have them send me a set of coils, plug wires and a Dyna S. Why? Don't need any holes in my ignition bwhahaha
