timing advance, lube?

Helow, just jumped over from the engine forum to ask this simple question. What is the best thing to use to clean and the lube the timing advancer? I may have made a mistake. I cleaned it with carb cleaner:unsure: and then sprayed silicone on it. When I took my bike for a little hop around the corner she had NO power on the bottom end But once we were past the advance curve she ran like a champ!!:cheer: . I hope I didn't fry an o-ring (if it even has one?) or something on my advancer. I'm hoping it's just the cheap lube I have. Any input?

You can use oil, grease, really anything. Silicon should even work. All that matters is it's not seized up. I haven't lubed mine for 40,000 miles. I checked it the other day and it's not stuck. All that matters.
321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

Thad, you don't mention what your' bike is, but centrifical advances are very similar regardless and easy to service.things to note are cam lobe wear, relation of lobe to backing plate prior to dis-assembly , and wear between cam lobe and pivot shaft. with advance unit in hand and springs removed, simply rotate lobe to center of travel and draw out. weights are staked to plate and remain in sittu, simply clean/free, lube and re-assemble.as noted nearly any lube will due, as there is little load applied and lots of surface area. tho I recommend something that will be low friction, doesn't stiffen w/age and hangs around without slinging onto points.I like Redline assy lube, tho white lithium, or mollidemm(cut w/engine oil to suit)would be fine and probably last the life of the machine. hope this helps, G

+1

If you put grease on it, that tends to gunk up over time.

I cleaned mine with carb cleaner spray and used light oil on it.

Sorry I thought my bike was posted somewhere. This is about my KZ900 76' model. I used clear dielectric grease and it has stopped it from advancing so I had to take it back apart and clean it again. It seems to be working better. It is still sluggish at low RPM's but I'm not sure that is an advancing issue.

Some light oil like 3 in one or sewing machine oil works well as a lubricant.

just use moly it won't fling off it will repel moisture and it wont dry out and it actually adheres to the parts.
