Dyna S failure?
28 Oct 2008 13:51
Hello, I'm new to KZrider. I'm riding a 1978 kz650 B2, I'm the second owner, and I'm lucky enough to have befriended the original owner. Recently he and I vacuum synced the carbs and retensioned the cam chain, as well as tried to install the coil ignition mod suggested by wired george:
www.wgcarbs.com/index.php?option=com_con...view&id=12&Itemid=26
The installation yielded a non-running motorcycle, so we put it back how it was, and she started back up. A short run down the road suddenly reveiled that she was only firing on two cylinders. We thought we may have blown one of the coils, since it was the 1 & 4 not firing, but upon switching the leads, so that the 1,4 was being fired by the 3,4 coil, the 1,4 still wasn't firing. We decided that it must be that half of the dyna S electronic ignition had failed, so I've ordered a new one, and we'll see if that fixes it.
My question is: did we break it? If I try to wire up the coil mod, will I break it again?? Has anyone had a dyna S fail on them before? Has anyone had this mod work for them?
Thanks in advance!
Foolhearty, and lovin it.

Have you gone to his website
www.wgcarbs.com
and asked him?
He is pretty busy at times but may be able to help. The website has a similar forum to this one.

I have Dyna S ignition, Dyna 3 OHM green coils, and the WG coil rewire. All are working perfectly. Could some connections have come loose in the process?

I had the same thing happen to me except cylinders 2&3 was not firing. I was not doing the coil mod at the time. I quickly figured out that running a dyna S ignition with stock coils is a bad combination. New dyna ignition with new dyna coils and not a problem in 15 years.

Often when the Dyna-S ignitions failed it's more a case of being killed...
One thing all electronics are susceptible to is voltage spikes. Once you get the bike running, check the voltage at the battery - at idle it should be around 12.5 volts. As you bring the RPM up, the voltage should cap at around 13.5 to 14 volts. If the readings continue to climb past 15 volts the regulator has failed.
Interestingly the Dyna-S can get damaged when insufficient voltage is supplied to it.

This fella did come onto my forum and ask the same question... This is what I told him:
I imagine that you have not hooked something up correctly even without the coil mod installed. Check both coils to ensure that there is power at both coils. This will be the red or yellow red small wire connected at the front of the coil. Since the 1 & 4 cylinders are not firing, check the black wire and trace it back to the 1 & 4 Dyna S pickup coil. You probably had to splice the black wire to the Dyna S as I don't think their wires are long enough to reach the coils. Check power to the Dyna S. They give you a BLUE splice connector and you splice into a hot wire and this splice powers both the 1 & 4 and 2 & 3 pickup coils. This BLUE splice connector is probably not real reliable. I would remove it and solder the power wires together.
If something quits working after you have messed with it, it is FAR more likely that the messing with it is the problem and that it is likely not broken.
